1. Introduction
The Environmental Science and Engineering discipline at Nanjing University is one of the national “Double First-Class” disciplines in China. It has ranked among the top in all previous Discipline Evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education, and achieved outstanding results in the Fifth Round of Discipline Evaluation. The School of Environment has developed a distinctive feature of integration of science, engineering, and management, and connectivity of industry, academia, and research. A comprehensive system of scientific and technological innovation and social service has been built, covering basic research, technological development, standard formulation, and achievement transformation. It boasts prominent strengths in fields including water pollution control equipment and standards, environmental behavior and ecological effects of pollutants, environmental remediation and watershed pollution control, and environmental health and risk management. The School is equipped with a first-class faculty team, with 95 full-time faculty members, including 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 16 recipients of national high-level talent programs, and 28 recipients of national youth talent programs. The faculty teams have been selected for Demonstration Initiative for Establishment of Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams in Universities Nationwide, and have been selected as one of the first batch of National Outstanding Engineer Teams.
Along with the growing demand for systematic governance of ecological environment and rapid advances in artificial intelligence technology during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the environmental discipline has entered a transformative development era, with increasingly prominent features of interdisciplinarity, multi-scale integration, and intelligence. This also presents the School with new opportunities and challenges in faculty development. The School is currently recruiting outstanding global talents in frontier environmental fields such as environmental health, environmental protection equipment, and smart environment, so as to further enhance the School's academic contributions, capacity to serve industrial development, and global influence.
